A wine cellar refrigeration system plays a crucial role in keeping the wines safe until they are consumed. Since wine is sensitive to heat and light, it must be stored in an environment with regulated temperatures and humidity levels, which can be achieved if a reliable wine cooling unit is installed.

Refrigerant Leak Wine Cooling Unit Repair: How Experts Helped a Client in Orange CountyOrange County

M&M Cellar Systems is one of the members of the Wine Cellar Designers Group, led by Mario. They helped a homeowner in Orange County who was experiencing a refrigerant leak in his wine cooling unit. Contacting an HVAC specialist immediately was a wise decision.

A refrigerant helps wine refrigeration systems to perform its function, which is to produce cold air in the wine room. Freon is the most common type of refrigerant, which is in liquid form. When brought to room temperature, it turns to gas and goes back to its liquid form when brought back to a colder environment.

When not fixed immediately, a wine cooling unit that lacks Freon will cause a rise in temperatures and cause wine storage problems. Moreover, you will lose a pound of Freon every few months. Since it is costly, you will spend much for the replacement of the wasted Freon.

When you avail of a regular maintenance plan, M&M Cellar Systems will be able to detect the problems and make the necessary wine cellar cooling unit repairs. Moreover, it will prevent costly expenses in the future because your climate- control system is working effectively.

How M&M Cellar Systems Detected the Wine Cooling unit Leak

When the homeowner called M&M Cellar Systems about the leaking wine cellar cooling unit the team conducted an on-site visit to diagnose the problem. The refrigeration system installed was about 3-year old. It is an HS 4600 system from US Cellar Systems.

The team uses three methods to detect Freon leaks. These are the Bubble Leak, UV Light, and Freon Electronic Leak methods. The most precise among these three methods is the UV light method, which was used by M&M Cellar Systems in this wine cellar cooling unit repair in Orange County.

The unit was low in Freon, so Mario added a UV detectable dye (a liquid tracer) to the condenser. They let the liquid circulate within the system for a month. After that period, he want back to the site with his team. Using an inspection lamp, they found out that some dye with the refrigerant was leaking out of the condensing drain. They were able to locate the leak inside the unit, which was within the copper coils.

Fixing the Freon Leak

M&M Cellar Systems went outdoors where the condensing unit was located to get the Freon out of the system using a machine. The Freon was recovered from the condenser after hooking up the gauges to the wine cooling system and was contained in a clean tank or cylinder.

The team had to access the leak so they could make the necessary repair to the wine cellar cooling unit. What they did was open the unit and locate the leak, then put the unit back in its place. The recovered Freon was injected into the evaporator.

Adding an Additive to the Condensing Unit

M&M Cellar Systems added an additive to the condenser when the Freon levels and pressure were good. The additive, which was contained in a can, would help seal very minimal leaks in the system.

Adding these substances requires skills and knowledge. As an HVAC expert, Mario knew he had to be extra careful when doing it. The substances must be added according to the capacity of the equipment. He did not use the whole bottle of the stopper because it would clog up the refrigeration unit and may lead to system breakdown.

The team sealed the leaks, put back the components, and ran the system again. Based on his assessment of the wine cellar cooling unit repair in Orange County, there was a 50% chance of fixing the leak. If after a month, the problem is still there, they would come back and check the level of the Freon to determine if there is still leakage. If the problem persists, the condensing unit would have to be replaced.

On the other hand, if the refrigeration system is working well without any refrigerant leaking, it could be running for about 5 to 10 years more. M&M Cellar Systems helped the client save money. Instead of spending on the replacement of the unit, he just spent on the repair service.
