A Creative Builder Built a Home Wine Cellar for an Interior Designer
An interior designer was looking for the best company who could design and build a custom wine cellar in her home. She wanted to make sure that every aspect of the construction process would be done correctly. She sought the help of Blue Grouse Wine Cellars, a member of the Wine Cellar Designers Group in Los Angeles.
As one of our partners in transforming spaces into a stellar home wine cellar, they have proven their creativity, passion, and expertise in creating functional and tastefully designed wine storage facilities. Their goal is to meet all of the aesthetic, technical, and financial requirements of the client.
Combining Contemporary and Traditional Design Resulted in an Awe-Inspiring Custom Home Wine Cellar
The high-end home is occupied by a single family and has luxurious features. We had to be very detailed in designing the wine cellar because the owner is a professional interior designer. We have had guidance from her, making this project different from the rest. The finished product is a remarkable sight!
The Client’s Requirements
Working with a builder who is capable of transforming any type of space into a stunning home wine cellar will prevent wine storage problems and regrets in the future. At Blue Grouse Wine Cellars, they have encountered various challenges in their projects in Los Angeles and other areas in the United States. Space constraints did not stop Blue Grouse Wine Cellars from transforming a small space into a tastefully designed wine cellar.
The interior designer wanted to combine contemporary and modern design to add flair to her wine room. She wanted to see her wine collection displayed in wine racks with a rich, dark tone. She helped us in designing the layout of her racking. She chose the ceiling detail, light fixture, and flooring.
Cathedral-Like Ceiling
The owner added a beautiful feature to her wine cellar design. The center part is higher than the sides, making it look like a cathedral. She also added an elegant metal chandelier that hangs from the middle of the ceiling. This contemporary style ceiling makes the wine room unique and awe-inspiring.
Door and Flooring with Brown Tones
The owner selected the door. Blue Grouse Wine Cellars added an entryway on both ends of the room. The doors were constructed from wood with dark stain. For the flooring, we also used wood, but we used a little creativity to make it look stylish. The team organized the pieces to create a gorgeous pattern similar to a basilica.
Tastefully Designed Wine Racks
Before designing the wine racks, Blue grouse Wine Cellars asked the client some questions that would help them determine the bottle configuration, size, and capacity of the racking suitable for this project. By gathering the necessary information about the client’s need and requirements, the builder would also be able to choose the ideal material for the wine racks.
- Do you purchase by the case or by the bottle?
- Do you need storage space for cases?
- Do you have large format bottles like magnums and champagne?
- Do you store half size for dessert wines?
To achieve the old-world ambiance in this home wine cellar built by a top-notch builder in Los Angeles, Blue Grouse Wine Cellars installed traditional wine racks in dark stain. They constructed the wine racks from Knotty Alder, a wood species popular for its durability, beautiful knots, and high-resistance to warping.
Features of the Wooden Wine Racks
After a careful assessment of the client’s needs, Blue Grouse Wine Cellars started designing the wine racks that would be installed on the left and right walls of the home wine cellar. Both walls have the same racking style. We suggested the following bottle configurations.
- Individual bottle storage
- Rectangular bins for wood cases
- Diamond bins
- A display row
- A countertop
The individual wine racks were designed for accommodating standard bottles. Blue Grouse installed them on both sides of the arch. They added a display row in the middle. This section pitches the bottles at an angle to keep the cork in contact with the wine. Keeping the cork moist will prevent the cork from getting brittle and shrinking. When the cork dries out, it will lose its elasticity, allowing oxygen to enter the bottle. When this happens, the wine will be oxidized and have an unpleasant taste and aroma.
The center of the racking consists of an arch with a tabletop. This area provides the owner a place for storing a few bottles and accessories. Below the tabletop, you can find the 3-level rectangular bins intended to store the client’s wood cases.
Wine cellar Lighting
The lighting system plays a significant role in achieving the mood that you want in your home wine cellar. Your choice of lighting can make or break the overall ambiance in your space. Therefore, it is a smart idea that you work with an expert designer in Los Angeles, like Blue grouse Wine Cellars. They always make sure that your lighting system is designed to display your collection safely and dramatically.
For this particular project, we installed LED lighting fixtures. LED lights are known for their low heat emission, which prevents the wines from heat damage.
The owner added a spotlight above the archway on the left and right walls. There is also strip lighting on top of the display row that highlights the bottles.
