In one of their projects, a client sought their help transforming a small space in their home into a functional wine cellar with contemporary features. The Arctic team had to work closely with the owners and determine their needs by making a careful assessment. With their expertise, knowledge, and passion for building wine rooms, they always exceed their client’s expectations.
Features of the Glass Wine Cellar in California
Glass wine cellars are in demand among homeowners because of the many benefits they offer. Their contemporary look adds a luxurious appeal to any space and provides a clear view of the wines from the outside. Glass and metal are the common elements used for building contemporary wine rooms. However, in this glass wine cellar in California, Arctic Metalworks combined metal and wood, and the result was impressive!
Metal Wine Racks from VintageView
Upon entering the wine room, you will find VintageView metal wine racks on the left and right walls. VintageView is popular for its contemporary wine storage systems engineered with stability and durability.
Their products are designed with a label-forward orientation. This feature allows for ease in browsing the bottles. There is no need to flip the bottle to see the description of the wine.
Flipping the bottle will disturb the sediments settled on one side of the bottle and affect the taste and texture of the wine. They created a backer board made from plywood to help the wall-mounted wine racks bear the weight of the bottles.
Wooden Elements on the Back Wall Complemented the Metal Wine Racks
The back wall consists of wooden wine racks designed to complement the metal and glass elements in the wine cellar. Arctic Metalworks incorporated rectangular openings at the bottom section of the racking. This style of racking provides additional storage space for the client’s few bottles, wine cellar accessories, and decorative features. It has a tabletop for decanting and serving wines.
The top section consists of a big rectangular opening with a brick-style mirror that adds character to the glass wine cellar. It is surrounded by square openings and individual wine racks.
Wine Cellar Cooling System
Wine has to be stored in a place where the conditions are stable. The temperature and humidity levels must be regulated to protect your wines from damage. The ideal temperature is between 55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit, and the humidity level should be 60 to 70 percent. Installing a reliable wine cooling system will safeguard your wines for many years.
The size and type of the refrigeration unit will depend on the different factors, including the BTUs required for a particular wine room. The BTUs are determined by performing a heat load calculation. Keep in mind that the wrong choice and installation of our refrigeration system will cause costly damages. It is best to work with an HVAC professional to ensure that everything is done correctly.
In this glass wine cellar in California, Arctic Metalworks decided to utilize an industrial wine cooling system. Since the afternoon sun faces one of the walls, they had to install a climate-controlled unit with a stronger capacity. A 1/3 horsepower wine cooling unit was the best option considering the amount of light the wine room receives and the amount of glass installed.
If the owners set the wine cooling unit at 55 degrees Fahrenheit and condensation builds up, it is easy to adjust the temperature. The unit is the hardest working and the best unit in the industry. The team added a pump that will catch the water and pump it to an outdoor location.
The condenser, the noisier component of the system, was installed outdoors, resulting in a quiet operation and maximizing cooling efficiency. In this glass wine room, the Arctic team placed the evaporator on the left wall, covered with a wooden louvered grill cover, which can be removed for cleaning purposes. There are refrigeration lines and drains that lead to the
We recommend a regular maintenance plan for every wine cellar refrigeration system. It can be done twice a year. This way, problems with your wine cooling unit can be determined earlier and can be solved, preventing costly damages.
Seamless Glass Door
The seamless glass door was perfect for this wine cellar. It allows the wind display to be visible from the outside without any obstruction. The glass panels are thermally insulated to prevent condensation build-up and help regulate the conditions inside the wine room.
