Do you have an odd space in your home that you want to transform into something functional? In Playa Vista, a wine lover had an extra space in his new home. He decided to convert it into a small yet elegant wine storage facility for his few bottles. IronWine Cellars, a trusted Las Vegas wine rack manufacturer, collaborated with a top-notch manufacturer in converting an odd space under the stairs into an eye-catching custom wine cellar. Challenges did not stop them from creating a sophisticated wine room.
The Expertise of Master Designers in Las Vegas Enabled them to Succeed in a Challenging Custom Wine Cellar Construction Project
Many people have been making wine a partner of a sumptuous meal. Wine cellars are increasing in demand because many homeowners want to store their precious wines safely and display them impressively.
A wine collector and his family had moved to Playa Vista, a neighborhood located in the Westside of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States. The spacious 2-story house was ideal for a big family like theirs. They were happy with the property except for the odd-shaped area under the stairway. The head of the family has a small collection of wines, so he decided to convert the space into a gorgeous wine cellar.
The client expected the project to be complicated, so he thought it was best to hire a professional. They contacted Coastal Custom Wine Cellars to seek help with the conversion of their space into a functional wine cellar. Coastal Custom Wine Cellars chose IronWine Cellars, one of our members at Wine Cellar Designers Group, as the wine rack manufacturer for this project.
Challenges in this Custom Wine Cellar Construction Project
IronWine Cellars has been our partner in many wine rack installations in Las Vegas. Challenges are a part of every project, and if you work with an expert like them, you do not have to worry about problems not being solved.
The primary challenge was finding a way to fit all of the 348 bottles in the cellar in a tiny space under the stairs. They were glad to know that the client already had a self-contained refrigerated wine cabinet manufactured by Le Cache.
Le Cache has been providing sturdy and elegant wine cabinets for many years, helping wine lovers enjoy wine collecting without going beyond the budget. During the planning stage, we considered this solution because we thought it was difficult to store the whole collection in a single space. The bottles that needed more maturation could be stored in the cabinet. The custom wine cellar where we installed the wine racks would serve as the display area of the wines that are ready for consumption.
Custom Wine Cellar Designed with Form and Function in Mind by Experienced Manufacturers in Las Vegas
Another challenge in this particular custom wine cellar conversion project completed by Las Vegas experts is the sloping ceiling of the room, in addition to the limited space. The creativity, passion, and extensive knowledge of IronWine Cellars and Coastal helped create an impressive design for the wine room despite space constraints.
3-Dimensional Drawings
After making a careful assessment of the wine racks, the Coastal team created 3D drawings so we could better visualize the completed custom wine cellar under the stairs. The CAD images consist of various racking elevations, bottle capacities and configurations, and racking dimensions.
They decided to incorporate the following racking styles: diamond bins, a high reveal display row, individual bottle as well as wooden case storage into the design. After the client approved the drawings, they began the installation process.
Construction Phase
When you work with these qualified cellar experts in Las Vegas, you can be confident that challenges will not hinder them from building your dream custom wine cellar. Coastal Custom Wine Cellars always makes sure that their client’s room is refrigeration ready before we start the installation of the wine racks, cooling unit, and door. However, for this particular project, it was impossible to enclose the tiny area under the stairs with seamless glass wall and achieve the optimum conditions (55-65 degrees Fahrenheit).
The wine cellar serves as a display area for the wines that are ready for consumption. They have a wine cabinet for storing the wines that need to mature over time.
Elegant and Functional Custom Wine Rack System for a Small Wine Cellar
The type and design of wine racks have a significant impact on the overall appeal of your wine cellar. Therefore, it a smart idea to hire a creative designer who understands and can determine the most suitable racking system for your aesthetic and functional needs. Work with someone who can provide a practical yet appealing wine storage system. For this particular project, Coastal Custom Wine Cellars hired IronWine Cellars to build the wine racks for the oddly shaped room.
Racking Features: Las Vegas Designers Incorporated Racking Configurations for Maximum Storage Capacity without Compromising Aesthetic Appeal
The fabricators placed the diamond bins at the center of the bottom racking. This racking style is ideal for bulk storage. The bottles are stored on top of another, promoting a good airflow around the bottles. They constructed large openings so they could accommodate large-format bottles such as magnums, Champagnes, Oregon Pinots, and Burgundies.
On the left and right sides of the diamond bins, they installed a few individual wine racks and two storage bins for wood cases. They incorporated a ledge and a high reveal display row in the middle section.
The tabletop provides a place for serving and decanting wines. The top section consists of racking for individual storage. The high reveal display row not only adds character to the wine cellar; it also stores the bottles at a 15-degree angle. This bottle orientation allows the cork to remain in contact with the wine. Keeping the cork moist can be beneficial in preserving the elasticity of the cork.
When the cork dries out, it becomes brittle and shrinks. When this happens, an unwanted amount of oxygen will get into the bottle and mix with the wine, which will have an adverse effect on the wine’s flavor and aroma.
The wine rack design created by Las Vegas experts for this custom wine cellar was intended for storing light bottles above and below the display row.
Most Suitable Wood for the Wine Racks
When choosing a material for the wine racks, your chosen builder must consider the functional requirements of the clients, as well as the existing theme of your home. For this particular project, IronWine Cellars constructed the wine racks using Alder wood. This type of hardwood is known for its versatility, workability, and sturdiness. It has fine grains, a subdued grain pattern, and small pore structure.
For a more lavish look, they painted the Alder wine racks with a rustic stain. The client followed IronWine Cellars’ recommendation not to apply lacquer on the wine racks so it would complement the color of the flooring.
